…every time I visit friends in Somerset
In the late 80s and through the 90’s, Amon’s was my insomniac husband John’s almost daily breakfast choice at dawn o’clock or earlier. The staff used to get him grapefruit from the nearby Winn Dixie, although it was not on the menu, and they kept his personal grapefruit spoon with the serrated edge under the counter for him. In chili season, we both had to have the lunch special of Rosemary’s chili with a grilled cheese sandwich at least once a week. I live in TN now, but every time I visit friends in Somerset, I stop by for a sandwich, or a muffin, or a biscuit with gravy, and sometimes there‘s a chat with a staff member who was there 40 years ago or so too.
…after school treat was always a famous cream horn
While in high school back in 1954 our after school treat was always a famous cream horn from Amon’s bakery. My friends and I would stop and get our cream horns and then go to Tiball’s to hang out afterwards.
…enjoying Amon’s for fifty years
I went to high school at Somerset high school the year was 1951. Amons was downtown next to The Virginia theater during our school days we were allowed to leave for lunch. Some of my classmates and I would walk down from the school and stop at Holsomback’s for lunch then would stop by Amon’s to get a cream horn. We would do this five days a week up until graduation. I have been enjoying Amon’s for fifty years.
Best bakery in the state
I have loved this bakery since I was a child. Used to save my money up to buy a Bismarck then later on I got very very sophisticated and started buying the cream horn. That is the first thing I think of now when I get to Somerset. Go get cream horns. I even have friends who bring me cream horns. As I travel around the state I compare them like Danville Independence Owensboro but Somerset has the best bakery in the state Let’s have a big party
It was gorgeous
I loved coming by there every time I was in town. I would order a dozen glazed donuts and ask Uncle Amon for my family discount. 🤔🥰 He always laughed and told cashier to add an additional amount to bill. 😅. I always asked when he was there because I knew he enjoyed that interaction 🥰. Dad ordered my wedding cake from Amon’s. It was gorgeous. Sometimes on an early morning visit to Somerset, we would stop by and enjoy a delicious breakfast . It was always a way to have a great breakfast and visit with Uncle Amon and the family.
Our wedding cake came from there
I have been an Amons fan since November 29,1975!! Our wedding cake came from there !! And our 50th Anniversary celebration cake will be from there this November!!! And of course their donuts are still my favorite!! CONGRATULATIONS AMONS!!!
I think of it often
I loved the three years I worked there. I think of it often, and compare every donut i eat to theirs. I’ll take the one with the cherry jelly in the middle, and the cream ring on the top, my favorite.
That was a long time ago
Every time I went to Somerset with my grandma, we visited Amon’s. I got those little delicious bars, the name of which I cannot remember. That was a long time ago.
It was called Pulaski Bakery then
When I was growing up each year I asked for a birthday cake from Amon’s (I am so old that it was called Pulaski Bakery then…..but it was Amon’s). On the Saturday before my birthday Mother and I would go see Amon and order my cake then we would go across the street to Woolworth’s for lunch.
Fast forward to now. Ever since I moved back to the area I have continued the tradition….in a way….. by having an Amon’s cupcake on my birthday. Here is my cupcake for today ![]()

Melt in your mouth
I have enjoyed his wonderful donuts for 50 years! when I and my brothers passed his shop on the way to school, we always went in. He (Amon) would be getting some out of the oven and he would give us one of those. you talk about good, they would nearly melt in your mouth.
…all the way from Lexington
I have seen my husband drive all the way from Lexington to to Somerset to buy Amon’s donuts. They are the best. Mr. Stephens lived the American dream.
We always ended up at Amon’s
I remember in 1977 and 1978, we would go out during 1st period from SHS to “sell’ ads for the yearbook. Of course, we always ended up at Amons Bakery for doughnuts and take orders back to our teachers. Yes, sometimes the principal, Jim Andy Sears, would show up and encourage us to get back to school but we would usually return around lunch time for a coney or hamburger and glass of milk! GREAT times and memories. Mr. and Ms. Stephens never met a stranger and treated us with respect and always a kind word!!
Amon Stephens
Every birthday cake for my kids birthday’s have come from Amons. Wont get them anywhere else. He would come into our office with a box of donuts and say, “The sweetest man in town is here”. He was such a sweet and loving person. He will be greatly missed.

They made our wedding cake 49 years ago!
Love Amons they made my daughter’s first Birthday cake 56 years ago
…drive from Georgetown
I have a friend I worked with would drive from Georgetown to buy 2 dozen of their donuts once a month. Now when I come down I pick him up a dozen to help him out.
Salt-risen bread
As a teen, I lived in Somerset with my mom and sibs. Mom always looked to Amon’s (Tradewinds) for salt-risen bread as they were the only ones who still made it. She always got it before visiting family in Shelbyville.
My memories go way back of Amon’s
When we got to High School at Somerset High School we were allowed to leave school at Lunch Time. Many many times me and other students would walk downtown and go to Amon’s Bakery then and buy pastries for our lunch. We would then walk 3 stores to Cecil’s Market and get a bottle of coke cola and have our lunch ![]()
